St. Mary Academy – Bay View Diverts 8 Tons of Food Waste Annually with Remix Organics

Rhode Island | School: St. Mary Academy – Bay View (Preschool–Grade 12)

Turning Food Waste Into a Resource

St. Mary’s partners with Genuine Foods and Remix Organics to turn unused food into a resource, bringing the school’s values of academic excellence, compassion, and social responsibility into its dining program.

Daily cycle of renewal:

Unused food is weighed, collected in bins, and processed into nutrient-rich compost on a schedule tailored to the school.

Meaningful impact:

  • 8 tons of food waste repurposed each year
  • 36 metric tons of CO₂ prevented annually, equal to taking 8 cars off the road

Education in action:

The program models responsibility for students, showing how cafeteria choices contribute to broader environmental progress.

Extending School Values Through Sustainability

By making sustainability part of everyday dining, St. Mary’s demonstrates how what nourishes students can also nourish the planet.
